Description
The Abingdon Pottery Jar # 308 that they named "Coolie Jar" was offered in their first catalog in 1934 & until 1938. It was made again in 1947, but this jar has the early foil label so would be 1934-38 production. This jar has the look of a classic oriental ginger jar & is likely a shape designed by their first designer, Eric Herstlett, who designed several pieces with an oriental influence. The jar is 11 inches tall to the top of the knob on the lid. The lid is about 3-1/4 inches in diameter. The jar is 4 inches wide at the widest point of its curved body. The top rim of the jar is about 2 inches in diameter & the bottom rim is about 3-1/4 inches in diameter. The jar has the early silver & blue foil Abingdon label & an in-mold shape number 308 on the bottom.
This jar is somewhat hard to find with the lid because many of them got broken over the years; it is possible that the jar was sometimes sold from the factory as a vase without the lid. This jar & lid are both in good vintage condition - no hairlines or crazing - but the jar does have some tiny chips on the bottom rim as shown in the last photos.
