Description
Up for your consideration is a 56 piece set of vintage 1940's Harker Bakerite ovenproof dinnerware in their orange tulip pattern one of Harker's most successful ventures in the porcelain china market of the 1940's. The Harker China Company of East Liverpool, Ohio and later Chester, West Virginia, is commonly called the, "oldest pottery in America." It started in a log cabin in 1840 by Benjamin Harker, and remained on its original site for ninety-one years. In 1931 the plant moved across the river to Chester and took over another plant owned by the Edwin M. Knowles plant as the Knowles China Company ceased operation at this time.Harker and his family members continued to own and run his family business and from 1840 until 1972 produced thousands of patterned porcelain china and ceramics. In the late 1940's when men returned from WWII, husbands and wives began to formally entertain in their homes once again, Harker introduced a new line of pottery china called Bakerite, and much to the surprise of the American housewife of the day the exquisite orange tulip patterned china with its 22K gold rims was oven proof and much more beautiful than most ovenware of the time. Oven proof dinnerware can be warmed or baked in the oven at higher temperatures adding versatility to the already beautiful orange tulip pattern line of dinnerware.

The set also includes a 9" pie plate, pie server, teak wood pie stand, and a 9 1/2" serving bowl (picture #5). A 8" X 8" 2 quart disc water pitcher and six 16 ounce matching tumblers (picture #6). A 6" H X 9" L 1 quart tea pot, sugar & creamer, and a pair of salt & pepper shakers with the original cork stoppers inserted underneath them (picture #7). Six 8 ounce tea/coffee cups 3" H X 4 1/4" L and six 6" saucers (picture #8). In (picture #9) I have shown a close up of the orange tulip pattern taken from the water disc pitcher for your review. All 56 pieces have 22K gold rims on them and in my final picture (picture #10) is the Harker Bakerite hallmark also done in 22K gold. The set is in 'mint' condition very rare for a set like this one.
A set like this is a collector's set as the orange tulip pattern is a rare pattern as very few pieces have survived over their 77 year history. Besides being a sought after collectible set it is functional too as a dinnerware set however, the pieces are quite smaller than a standard set of dinnerware you would find to day in most retail stores. Nonetheless, it is functional as a set but on the petite side.
This set of dinnerware with its 22K trimmings, orange tulip pattern, add petite size would do well on a Mid-century Modern, Scandia, Danish Modern, contemporary, or minimalist table setting. As all of these motifs are making a come back these days. And, included in the sale is a beautiful teak pie display stand and 6 1960's MCM 8 ounce Libby tumblers making this a complete set of dinnerware ready for hosting your next dinner party.
