First issued in 1986 the American Silver Eagle has become far and away the most collected modern silver coin in the World! Each Silver Eagle is struck from 1oz of .999 fine silver. The obverse design features a modern rendition of Adolph A. Weinman's classic Lady Liberty and the reverse features a heraldic eagle with a shield. The reverse was designed by legendary coin designer and the 12th Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint John Mercanti!!
Now, for the first time in 35 years, the U.S. Mint has decided to make a dramatic change to this now classic Silver Eagle design. The new design will be issued later this year which means that this 2021 W Proof Silver Eagle will be the final Proof Silver Eagle issued with the original Mercanti reverse design!
This 2021 W Proof Silver Eagle 35th Anniversary Type 1 was struck at the West Point Mint! It has been certified PR70 DCAM Advanced Release by PCGS!! The PCGS population report shows that there are a total of 596 PR70 grade coins with this designation.
