1956 Buick Dealership Lighted Wooden Countertop Car Option Display Box:

This is an original wooden lighted countertop display box that would have been in a Buick dealership showroom in 1956.  It was meant to show potential customers what their new car would look like with various colors for the roof, top half, and bottom half of the car.  It is lighted from behind with a generic car shown on the screen.  By choosing different color transparencies that slide into the top of the cabinet and align with the shape of the car, you could see all different color options for those three areas of the car.  And it is backlit to make it look even better!  And best of all, this display still has its original color transparencies!  I’m not sure how many originally came with the display, but now there are fifteen different colors for the upper roof, sixteen for the center, and fourteen for the lower.  Cool period colors include Tahiti Coral, Apricot, Bedford Blue, Bittersweet, Cambridge Blue, Carlsbad Black, Castle Grey, Claret Red, Electric Blue, Glacier Green, Laurel Green, Seminole Red, Harvest Yellow, Foam Green, Cameo Beige, and Cadet Blue.  But it doesn’t end there, slide out the lower drawer and you can see and fee upholstery types and colors, as well!  There are 21 different color/fabric samples inside.  And on a flip open chart on top of them, there is a very detailed 1956 Trim Selection Chart!  How cool is all of this?!  Pretty cool in my mind, that’s why I have had this piece for a long time.  But times change and it may be right to move it along to any other car nut or can enjoy it like I have.  The display box measures 20-5/8” wide, 16” tall, and 11-7/8” deep.  There is a manufacturer’s label on the underside of the top flip-up lid.  It shows as Wm. Melish Harris Associates Merchandising Displays, 600 west Putnam Avenue, Greenwich, Connecticut.  The wood cabinet is in GREAT shape with some noticeable scratches in the pain, mostly along the edges, just from being handled over the last 64 years!  It looks very nice but isn’t perfect.  This is an outstanding advertising piece for a transportation, automobile, or Buick collection.  It will make a great addition to any of those themes!  I will be sorry to see it go but happy that it will give enjoyment to another car crazy person like me.
